Twitter Follow Friday

Twitter Follow Friday

Well, its Friday and in Twitter land, we like pass on other Tweeters to others so they can follow too.  The common term for this is Follow Friday (hash word is #FF).  Rather then send out multiple Tweeters, I’m going to start listing them here (thanks to Chris Brogan’s Blog on this recommendation) and you can click to their profile then follow them.  This will be a weekly thing for me and I will be making changes or at least adding more so come back weekly! @poetpecky: So, for starters, I start with my Mom. She has always been an inspiration to me. In fact, she does a weekly blog & newsletter called “Inspiration from the Mountains” via her web site at www.bearwallowblessings.com. @chrisbrogan: He’s a savvy social networking and marketing blogger and informer. He wrote the article on doing this, rather then clogging up the Twitterverse. I think its a great idea! @SolutionCoach: I’ve recently been spending some time with Sean and he truly wants to help people big time.  He’s also on the verge of some great tools and training for business leaders and entrepreneurs.  Stay tuned there. #NoCo List: I’ve got a great list of Tweeters from Northern Colorado. Its growing and currently has at least a couple hundred. Feel free to follow it if you like. And, if you want to refer more to me, please direct message (DM) me. #Colorado List: I’ve got a list of Tweeters from Colorado, which is almost at 450. I’m sure there are many, many more but its hard to keep tracke of them. Believers-In-Christ: I am...
Social Networking – Taking advantage of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Social Networking – Taking advantage of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Social Networking: Taking advantage of Facebook,  Twitter and YouTube for your Church, Ministry, Organization or Business. April, 2010: This started as an online Webinar in November, 2009, for a Christian organization called Christian Media Assocation (CMA), at www.christianmedia.org.  Since then a lot has changed and been added (like Google Buzz) but I decided to add this to my blog and I’ve updated and added much more to make it more relevant. I will follow this up with more details about each of these awesome tools to increase your presence on the Web and hopefully to “connect” with people.  Isn’t that your ultimate goal? More will come in shorter spurts.  After several months of research and working within these social networks I’ve garnered a lot of information.  So, stay tuned.  Also, please feel free to sign up on my Newsletter as that is becoming active again. ~ Bill With all that is available on the Internet for your use, you can get overwhelmed with all of the articles, tutorials, books and even the paid-for advice that can bombard you with social networking. “Social Networking” is being talked about at an unbelievable buzz rate and the speed at which folks are signing up to do both Facebook and Twitter is amazing! In fact, the word “buzz” has become the new social networking answer from Google.  More about that in another article. So, let me help you get through the hype and help point you in the right direction to market your organization via the available social networking channels there are available. Over the next few weeks, I will share some basics...
Templates – Joomla has a ton of them!

Templates – Joomla has a ton of them!

Hi Everyone. Just a quick blog to share with you one of the greatest things about the Content Management System (CMS) that I use, Joomla!, is that you can change the templates pretty quickly.  It took me about 30 minutes to do this, with most of that time spent on a Logo at the top.  I also had to rearrange the modules (things like the search, twitter info, newsletter sign up, etc.) to set in the correct position of the web site.  All the graphics was already done for me.  With Joomla, you I set you up with templates, pre-made or custom, as well as modules to better communicate with your clients. I hope you like this template and if any of you ever need a blog site (using WordPress or Joomla!) for personal or business, I can help you out.  If you need a business site, I’ve got some pretty reasonable options for you so don’t be afraid to contact me.  If you find me on Google, you’ll see there is a coupon out there.  You just have to find it! And, thanks to Joomlabear.com for the free template.  These guys and many other developers out there do an awesome job of creating these types of templates and other things for your Joomla and WordPress web sites. God Bless!...
3 Free and Easy Ways to Increase Your Web Presence!

3 Free and Easy Ways to Increase Your Web Presence!

Many of you have enough web savvy to know you need to have a presence on the Internet if you want to compete or be found. To increase your web presence for your business, organization or group for a location, particularly in a town, city or region, here are 3 Free & Easy ways to do this. It involves Google, Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing and their local listings.  Local listings usually show when you do a search using a certain keyword combination that includes a business or organization as well as a city and state.  Example: “storefront window cleaner Loveland, CO” on Google search will result in Window King showing up right at the top.  The keyword phrase “whirlpool appliance repair Loveland, CO” will result in Jim & Dave’s Appliance showing at the top. Google Google, being the top dog in search engines, has a pretty good local listing service for your biz.  Think about it, how often do you hear the terms “I will google it” or “I will find it on Google?”  I don’t think I’ve ever heard “Let me Yahoo it” or “I will bing it.”   Anyway, on to the goal of this part of my blog. Go to http://www.google.com/local/add/businessCenter?gl=us&hl=en-US You will require a Google Account which can be any email address.  Make sure you use one either related to your business or one that you won’t change often.  I used a gmail account I’ve had for years.  Had I known where I was going with all this I would have used my business email address for this but alas, its too hard to change...
Why use a Content Management System (CMS) for my Web Site?

Why use a Content Management System (CMS) for my Web Site?

Hi everyone. I’ve been asked this a few times and more often then, I generally tell my new clients that I use a CMS for their web sites before they even ask this question. Almost all of the sites I host, design, develop and/or setup I use Joomla! as the CMS for their sites.  Joomla! is usually number 1 or 2 of the top open source content management systems that are available. There are several reasons why I use Joomla! (and others – WordPress and Drupal) and here they are: Open Source: This means it is freely available to use. Ease of Use: Joomla! is a very easy framework to use. Templates: there are many available (free and commercial) templates with themes for almost every type of organization, company or personal need. Extensions: available extensions (or applications) are readily available for Joomla! as well as for WordPress & Drupal.  What I’m referring to here are things on a web site that are more then just a page to look at.  Examples are calendar, contact form, message board, event sign up, shopping cart, photo gallery, news flash slider, social networking, memberships, and many, many, more. Common Platform: Joomla!, as well as most CMS’s will allow the use of a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor for most of the content.  This allows non-web programmers to add, change or update their own content.  Some of my clients love this and find it is very enabling to have this choice.  After 1-2 hours of teaching from me, my clients are able to manage their own web site content. Widespread...
Can your Facebook get hacked?

Can your Facebook get hacked?

Answer: Yes it can! I recently received a wall post from my brother saying something like: “Check out this hot new site I found…” followed by a short link, which led me to what looked like a facebook (FB) page asking for my password.  Without even thinking, I typed in my password and hit enter.  Then I immediately realized what I had done so I went to my FB profile and changed my password.   I then contacted my brother who reported it to FB and changed his password. Apparently, a friend of my brother’s appeared to have posted a note (she was hacked too) on his wall leading to what looked like a FB page asking for his login and/or password. He thought it was legit. Next thing you know, it looked like he was posting on everyone else’s wall asking his friends to check out a certain business or “on-line” opportunity.  Some links asked for a FB login while other lead you to some get-rich-quick scheme. Important: As long as you are already logged into FB, you will never be asked for a login or password except when you want to make changes in your profile, like your password. The fake wall post may say something like “Here’s the best facebook apps in my opinion…” with a web link to a site asking you for your username password or to some kind of ad about making lots of money. Once they get your login information, they will then begin using your friends list to post the same information on their walls. Hope this helps. As far as...
Facebook Page, Group and Advertising

Facebook Page, Group and Advertising

Hey Everyone, Why should my business have a Facebook Business Page, Group Page or do advertising on Facebook? Answer: There are many people using Facebook and because Facebook Ads can target based on geographic location as well as keywords, what a great way to target those running businesses or people groups!  Using a business page or group page, allows more interaction with clients, potential clients and people groups. First, if you have a personal Facebook account, you can create a Facebook page for a business or a Group page for an organization.  Since I’m well known to be a web guy anyway and often share my new web projects with my Facebook friends, I chose to use my personal account to create a Group page for my business.  If you don’t have a personal Facebook account and don’t want one, you can create a business account for the sole purpose of advertising on Facebook. Once your Facebook page is created, you can click on the link “Promote Page with Ad” or “Promote Group with Ad” depending on which you choose to do.  I also setup a Fan Box that is listed on my Business web page at www.billsweb.biz which provides a link back to my Facebook Page as well as other information.  Anyone can become a fan of my Facebook Page, even off of my web site. Here are some helpful tips I found while attempting to do this setup an ad.  You need to have an image (if not using the one from your Facebook company page) as well as target information as shown below. You will need...
About Bill

About Bill

So you want to know more about me?(Mar 13, 2010) Personal. Well, I recently turned 50 years old and being the son of a professional musician (Dad) and a writer (Mom), I have had the opportunity to use both of the these traits, though not as much as my parents have, especially the writing part.  I truly enjoy playing music and writing the occasional technical thing or two.  I can get wordy so I have to tone that back.  But, since this is my Blog site, perhaps you can endulge me to get a little crazy now and then. I’m a happily married man of 30+ years.  My wife, Sue, loves to ride horses as I do so we have a lot of fun.  We have 4 daughters, 3 of which are married. We have 4 grandchildren, 2 of which we are now gaurdians and parents for. I was born in New Mexico, raised some there but moved to West Virginia at 13 and have called that my home state for much longer than any other state.  I joined the U.S. Air Force after having challenges with getting the financing for college (its a long story) when I was 19.  I served our country from 1979 to 1984 and loved it!  I almost made a career of the Air Force.  From there, I lived in WV for a short time then moved to Boston area for 1-1/2 yrs until moving to Northern Virginia where I worked in the Washington DC area for 12 years.  In 1998, I got the opportunity to move to Colorado where we will probably live...
Blogging from the PC or MAC?

Blogging from the PC or MAC?

Why not journal what you want to have on your blog site using an application on your PC or MAC? I’ve been using a journal program on my computer to keep notes and various information like conversations, phone numbers, etc., for about 2-3 years now.  The program I use, and highly recommend is called The Journal, provided by David Michael.  This has been, without a doubt, one of the coolest programs I’ve ever used! (I understand there is a decent Mac program for journaling called MacJurnal – check it out here.) The nice thing is, if your using a WordPress blogging application on a web site, as I do here, you can then upload your journal to a blog.  Also, The Journal will provide multiple categories and pages. This web site, however, is a merge of Joomla! (one of the best content management systems) with WordPress (one of the best blog systems), thanks to CorePHP who created this awesome component for Joomla! and WordPress. The important thing is, use what works best for you.  If you like to Journal and if you think it might help someone else, why not share it on a blog web site?  And, for pastors, ministers, teachers and leaders, what a way to do it?  Aren’t you usually typing your notes somewhere?  Why not in a Journal?  Then upload it to a blog? There are some free blog sites out there but, if you want total control, get your own site at www.billwatkins.biz with your own domain name, like www.billwatkins.biz.  (I am working on some very reasonable web sites for anyone interested in just...
